Disappointed Part 1.
I know, it's been a bit with no update. I apologize, my mental health hasn't been great so I've been hibernating. Hopefully things change in the next few weeks and I'm able to get back into better moods.
So I found a new book series that sounded super cute. One of those small town romance series that has a twist or something happening part way through the story that makes the characters even better and stronger together. I just finished the second book and it's not really doing it for me. I'm going to finish the rest of the books because otherwise it'll drive me nuts, but luckily they're pretty short so I won't waste much time.
Not going to put the names of the books or the author out there, to start. I'm sure there are plenty of people who love them and they're not bad, they're just not really for me.
In the first book (Grumpy/Sunshine trope), the FMC is a semi-celeb who was part of one of those big city high school reality shows and now she's hiding, and the MC has some big secret past that he's hiding from. Honestly, the "twists" in the story were just a flop for me. The MC's dad had gotten caught making/selling drugs and there were some politicians and stuff involved, so he ran away to another state to get away from everything and he didn't want people to judge him on it (understandably), so he planned on running and moving away again if anyone found out. The "big twist" ended up being the FMC's little sister coming to town and threatening to out her, but then she doesn't do anything and she goes back home. It was a big disappointment.
The second book (Vacation fling) features the best friends of the MC/FMC in book 1. MC is trying to make his ranch/lodge work out and the FMC is visiting from the big city for a week and a half, for the friend's wedding. The time holes towards the end of her trip were weird because the author kept referring to them being together for a "couple of weeks" when it had barely been over a week. And this was repeated several times so it wasn't just a slip up that wasn't caught by editing. It goes from her stating after a few days that she knew he was in love with her, to her telling him she's in love with him. The FMC had this big secret that was mentioned a few times, and it was something that happened when she was younger that she didn't want to talk about. It was the biggest letdown in the history of twists. He gets her to talk about it and the whole story was that she was at some high school party and the cops were called and she jumped a fence and twisted her ankle and the police caught her. I actually jumped ahead a few paragraphs hoping I would see something more serious mentioned, but that was it. That was the big secret that she couldn't tell her best friend about and didn't want to talk about with the MC. I was expecting her to have been assaulted or something big, not twisting her ankle and being caught underage drinking. It's not like she was ubër religious or a socialite or something where it would affect her. She goes back to her big city and two weeks later he goes there to tell her that he'll sell his lodge/ranch (the one that he's been doing everything to save because it's family owned and his parents still live there) and move to the city to be with her. She tells him that she was in love with him making it seem like she fell in love with him when she got there and now she's not? It was weird. Then she tells him that she put in her 2 week notice that same morning and was going to move to the small town anyways because that was her home. IDK it was just strange to me, but maybe that's just me.
I'm going to start book 3 tonight (Surprise Pregnancy/Sports romance), which features the little sister of the MC in book 2 and a pro sports player. There's one more book after this one that's already been released (Single Dad/Nanny/Age Gap), but the last two of the series (Grumpy/Sunshine/Single Mom & Brother's Best Friend) don't come out until July and September, respectively. They're pretty short reads (under 300 pages) so I can knock them out within a few hours. I really like the FMC in the third book that I'm starting, so I have my fingers crossed that it'll be a better story. I'm a sucker for single parents so I have high hopes for the next two books as well. I can give or take on brother's/sister's best friend tropes so the last one is eh for me at the moment.
I'll read the next two and update on those, and then I'll make a part 3 after the last book comes out and I read the last two.
If you read this far, you're amazing and I appreciate you <3
